چکیده

The extended Hubbard Hamiltonian on a bcc lattice is studied at half-filling and for a finite hopping between next-nearest-neighbours, in mean-field approximation. An ionic insulating broken-symmetry phase is predicted for any hydrogenoid bcc solid in the density range 1.0 < r s < 2.6. The occurrence of an ionic phase would explain the failure to achieve hydrogen metallization at high pressures. Moreover, a metal-insulator transition is expected for sodium in the 100 GPa region.

Exotic high pressure behavior of light alkali metals, lithium and sodium

At ambient conditions, lithium and sodium behave as free-electron metals and adopt highly symmetric close-packed structures. Under high pressure, however, these simple metals undergo a series of complex phase transitions to structures of lower symmetry, along with significant changes of their physical properties. In this review we provide a comprehensive description of these light alkali metals...

Superconductivity in the alkali metals

At ambient pressure there are 29 elemental superconductors in the periodic table, none of which is an alkali metal. The first alkali metal to become superconducting under high pressure is Cs followed years later by Li. Alkali metals are believed to be exemplary free-electron systems. The fact that an alkali metal becomes superconducting at all is surprising and is a result of the fact that unde...

Enhancement of Critical Current across Single Grain Boundaries in YBa2Cu3Ox and Search for Superconductivity in Alkali Metals

The ability of single grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3Ox bicrystalline rings to carry electrical current is found to be significantly enhanced under hydrostatic pressure. Nearly hydrostatic pressures are applied to the alkali metals Li, Na, and K. in a search for superconductivity. Whereas Li becomes superconducting above 20 GPa at temperatures as high as 15 K, no superconductivity was observed abov...

The alkali metals: 200 years of surprises.

Alkali metal compounds have been known since antiquity. In 1807, Sir Humphry Davy surprised everyone by electrolytically preparing (and naming) potassium and sodium metals. In 1808, he noted their interaction with ammonia, which, 100 years later, was attributed to solvated electrons. After 1960, pulse radiolysis of nearly any solvent produced solvated electrons, which became one of the most stu...

Superconductivity in room-temperature stable electride and high-pressure phases of alkali metals.

S-band metals such as alkali and alkaline earth metals do not undergo a superconducting transition (SCT) at ambient pressure, but their high-pressure phases do. By contrast, room-temperature stable electride [Ca(24)Al(28)O(64)](4+)⋅4e(-) (C12A7:e(-)) in which anionic electrons in the crystallographic sub-nanometer-size cages have high s-character exhibits SCT at 0.2-0.4 K at ambient pressure. I...
